Lieven Baert is an authority on historical dance. He started his career in 1981 in Ghent (Belgium) and studied with prominent teachers such as Elizabeth Aldrich, Ingrid Brainard, Angene Feves, Andrea Francalanci, Francine Lancelot, Prof. Taubert and Barbara Sparti. In 1985 he founded `Chierlycke Danseryen', a company specialised in 16th century court dances. In 1987 he specialised in French/Burgundian 15th century court dance and gained tremendous success with his program `The art of dancing in the 15th century'. They went on tour in prestigious Old Music festivals - Utrecht, Glasgow, Krakau, Darmstadt, Berlin... The same year he collaborated with the Belgian ballet world in creating a new historical dance company `Danza Antiqua', directed by Jeanne Brabants. |
| In
1990 he is nominated "Lauréat de Vocation" for
his work on historical dance. His institute is founded in 1992 to create a field for research and performance practice of historical dance and to continue work with the existing dancing groups `Chierlycke Danseryen' and `The Art of Dancing'. New projects on `French baroque dance', `Historical dances in the Flanders' and `19th century social dancing' are started. In 1993 he is invited to make the choreography and direct a Monteverdi project with `Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda' and `Ballo delle Ingrate' in the Chamber opera of Warsaw (Poland). He also makes the choreography for `Venus and Adonis' of John Blow. |

He studied
baroque dance with Jane Gingell, Francine Lancelot,
Béatrice Massin and Marie Geneviève Massé.
With the companies `Timedance' (London), `Folia' (Utrecht)
and the `Amsterdam Baroque Theatre', he performs in baroque spectacles
in Europe. He is asked as an advisor for baroque dance in modern dance
productions of `Les Ballets Contemporaines de Belgique' and the
'Antwerp Chamber Opera'. |
